The reason I haven't blogged lately was mainly that the new music out there hasn't been up to my standards, and so I was really excited today when I saw the new release list. To begin with as you may all know even though we are the "greatest" country in the world, we can't still get all the music that the UK has until perhaps a few years after, this is true to this weeks "New Young Pony Club" release, but never the less I'm really exited because the whole CD is great and full of energy which is one of the things the other CDs out last weeks lack of.
Last week I got invited to watch Sean Kirkpatrick's CD release party, if you aren't familiar with Sean you need to know that he plays for "Paper chase" and he is a brilliant piano player. At first I my self wasn't sure what to expect but once that guy started playing and singing...WoW...it was amazing. He played the piano with such ease, and with mixtures of classical components that gave his music a very nice sophisticated touch, plus his voice really match and connected with the music; this one is definitely an album you should pick up now, for what I hear its available at Good Records and at Recycled books in Denton, and hopefully in the near future it will be at your nearest Barnes and Noble.
Last but not the least "Northern Sate" released their new CD "Better already" it's a very needed comeback of the girl band scene since most of the girl bands out there haven't released any albums for a long time; you may know something I don't, but even though they aren't as punk as "Le Tigre" I still believe they are a pretty good band and the CD well worth buying.
Finally there is a date for the US release of the Go! Team's "Proof of Youth". If you aren't familiar with the Go! Team because you've been living under a rock, they are a England, Brighton based six piece bad with two drums, that play a series of action themed songs and cheerleader cheers mixed in with guitars and Hip Hop beats. We've been able to hear some of their songs, thanks to the Internet and some blogs but the only CD available in the US is "Thunder, Lightning, Strike", "Proof of Youth" will be available September 11 of this year, so go out and buy it.
Last week in August 3rd Denton seemed to be booming with concerts. I got invited to watch my Friend's band "Red Monroe" at Hailey's, they were playing with a rather good line up: Tree Wave and Black Tie Dynasty Voot Cha Index. Thanks to We Shot JR. I was also made aware of this amazing concert going on at Secret Headquarters (Ghosthustler, Bleach Boys and Foxtrot). I really have been meaning to see Ghosthustler live for a while but its been rather difficult because of schedules conflict, so I figure Hailey's its only a few blocks away form Secret Headquarters, and Secret Headquarters is BYOB so I could drink up watch Ghosthustler and head to Hailey's to watch Red Monroe. So this plans didn't quite work out as I've hoped because all bands at Secret Headquarters got pushed forward because the band that was playing at J&J Pizza got kicked out and the cool guys of SHQ allowed them to play there; good for them bad for me or so I thought. My friend and I decided to finish our six pack and head to Hailey's and watch the show there, perhaps some other time I would be able to catch a show by Ghosthustler.
As I entered Hailey's I notice the crow there was really into Tree Wave, and how could they not aside form the normal technical difficulty of a hot microphone once in a while, the show was awesome, hot electrical beats followed by an awesome display of old school video game graphics, kept me perplexed watching in awe the show. So far the night wasn't looking so grim and up next was Red Monroe; I had completely forgotten that Red Monroe wasn't playing their own material, they had a special guess Tyson Meade of the Chainsaw Kittens and so they were playing for the most part his material. You know you are watching a great band when they are not playing their own music but it sounds like they've been playing it for years, and Red Monroe did that and more they brought up the energy that you are used to seeing with them, plus they made fairly average music sound just extraordinary, and of curse the crowd went wild when they played some of their own material, i must say it was sort of orgasmic.
You would have thought I was going to stay to see Black Tie Dynasty, however I had to wake up early the next morning and I really wanted to get back to SQH because I had a hunch that I could still catch up Ghosthustler, and I guess it was meant to be since as we entered Ghosthustler was finishing setting up. In the middle of the "stage" stood Alan Palomo a 5' 8" ish Latino, who even though he may not be the tallest guy in the room he definitely is one of those guys who by just walking into the room everyone notice, he asked for everyone to move closer and so the magic began, the whole group was was going crazy with their music; their new material although fairly different still was truly amazing, so much in fact I still can't figure out how can't they not be sign under a label yet.
I was really excited when I heard that Tokyo Police Club was coming to Dallas. I was a little apprehensive because they were going to play in the House of Blues, I had previously been to a concert in the house of blues and I had promised my self never to set foot in that place, people there were stuck up and the drinks way over priced but still how many times do you get to see Tokyo Police in your town.
So here is my take on the concert, opening band White Denim was simply amazing, the sound was mature and really professional, and although they are a fairly recent band they absolutely played flawlessly and got the crowd going, I personally would have had them being the second band not opening, but that is just my humble opinion. When they turned on the lights I became aware that I was surrounded by a room full of Baby Hipsters all of them looked like they had been dropped off by their parents and given some spending money; although a bit frightened nothing could have prepare me for what I was about to experience.
The second band was named Ra Ra Riot and I have no words to describe my dislike for them, first off all their music sounded like something you a High School student would listen, which come to think of it suited well its public, second of all there were two girls "Rocking" on the stage, one was a blond with long sorority girl waved hair with a violin, can I get a Celtic Women. The other one was wearing denim shorts and was pretending to dance with a cello, yes a cello everything about the band ticked me so much that it was hard to get into Tokyo which was the band that followed.
By the time it was Tokyo Police Club's turn my friend and I had decided to move the back for two reasons, one we had a guy trying to Hip Hop dance to Ra Ra Riot and second of all I was getting pretty ticked off the scene. When we made our way to the back we found out that we were not in fact the only people of age apparently all of the older crowed had decided to stay away form the punks or maybe closer to the bar I don't really know, so this made the whole performance more enjoyable. Like you heard before Tokyo Police Club were a really great live show, they interacted well with the crowd, and Graham Wright the keyboard player was really enjoiable to see preform, at one point I thought he was on speed. A surprising thing is that as you may have heard they have a very small repertoire and so for the encore instead of playing one of their songs they played "Friends of P" by the Rentals, which was really awesome although I doubt anyone knew the song because no body joined them in singing, or maybe I'm just getting old.
